Vealers sell strongly in quality market

TOP quality head and rising prices made for a good sale at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, last Wednesday, with 58 competing for the yarding of 793 head.
Four hundred and fifty nine vealers sold strongly with a high percentage above or close to the 200 cent mark which returned an average of 179.2 cents being two cents better than last sale.
Among the veal yarding were several pen lots of very nice store steers which suited restockers.
Heavy veal ranged from 119.6 cents to 228.6 cents and light 90 cents to 205 cents, with one 210 kilogram vealer making 277.2 cents.
Seventy bullocks improved on last week by three cents to 166.2 cents, bidding was brisk with bullocks ranging from 142 cents to 178 cents.
One hundred and forty eight heifers were yarded and rose four cents to a very respectable average of 152 cents, again quality was high with heifers ranging from 110.6 cents to 180 cents for heavy and 103.6 cents to 180 cents for light.
One hundred and fifteen steers made most improvement rising five cents to 153.5 cents, no sub 300 kilogram steers were present in the category with heavy steers making from 113.2 cents to 180 cents.
A much awaited improvement in prices came on Thursday as demand lifted prices for bulls, bullocks and cows alike.
Twenty four bulls made nine cents on last week rising to 146.9 cents with a range of 120.6 cents to 170 cents.
Nineteen bullocks carrying good weight and condition rose 18 cents to 171.5 cents, with a good range of 148 cents to 182 cents.
And 405 cows sold to excellent demand and lifted in average 10 cents to 128.2 cents, good heavy beef and dairy cows showed greatest improvement, the range for cows was 70 cents to 165.2 cents.
