Buyers get in before break

WITH no market next Monday due to Easter at VLE Pakenham, and a reduction of nearly 500 head, demand remained strong for all classes of cattle.
There was one extra buyer for heavier steers, and another for cattle to turn out, which aided steady prices.
However, the strong competition from feedlots and restockers led to price rises of up to 10 cents per kilogram.
The quality of the yarding varied with a larger percentage of vealers penned, and a larger tail in the market.
More vealers, and some excellent, assisted in a lot of good quality vealers making between 200 cents and 236.2 cents per kilogram. Other vealers made mostly from 180 cents to 210 cents with feedlots and restockers purchasing a number of better bred, through to poor condition cattle from 160 cents to 185 cents per kilogram.
Some supplementary fed yearlings were sold with some weighing up to and over 500 kilograms liveweight. This affected the overall averages of the fed cattle, which ranged from 178 cents to 205 cents per kilogram.
Many of the grass fattened steers and heifers made between 165 cents and 188 cents per kilogram.
Competition for the heavier and older steers was strong, which saw most sales of C muscle steers make between 172 cents and 184.2 cents with isolated sales of steers mouthed 0 to 2 teeth making 188 cents per kilogram. Grown heifers were not plentiful, and made from 134 cents to 168 cents per kilogram.
