Goon score twist

NAR Nar Goon thought it had
landed an unlikely win when coach
Clint Williams goaled right on the
final siren against Garfield on Satur
day.
The Goon had kicked the last
three goals of the game and the
scoreboard showed a four-point win.
But there was a catch and it finished
up as the one that got away.
It was soon discovered that the
scoreboard was wrong and that the
Stars had got up by two points in
front of a big home crowd.
There were positives to come
out of the game, most notably the
performance of Beaconsfield recruit
Luke McConnell, who provided a
real target as a leading forward and
finished with five goals.
Coach Clint Williams was also
pleased with the way the players
fought their way back into the
games after Garfield looked like
running away with it several times.
After half-time, the Stars kicked five
unanswered goals in the first 10 min
utes and they also kicked clear late
in the game, only to be reeled in
again.
The Goon missed several set
shots for goal and was left to rue the
16 behinds. ROC recruit Kevin
Quinn was lively throughout the
game, Williams stood up when
required, Chris Adams was solid in
defence and the Keane brothers,
Matt and Ben, continued their good
early season form.

RESERVES
THE reigning premiers got back
into the winning grove against a
determined Garfield on Saturday.
The game was played to a high
standard, with both teams looking
like winners at different times
throughout the game. Ben Simpson
proved to be a focal point at centre
half-forward for Nar Nar Goon and
finished the day with five goals,
Lucas Thomas, back from injury,
kicked four goals and won plenty of
possessions with a best-on-ground
performance.
Ruckman Adam Simpkin, who
has shown plenty of improvement
this season, took a number of strong
overhead marks and proved to be a
major obstacle for Garfield. Other
strong performances came from
Craig Lewis and Phil Dorning, who
both picked up plenty of posses
sions.
Coach Brad Jones was pleased to
get the four points after last week’s
disappointing loss and made the
point that a number of players had
made significant improvement from
the previous week.
