Stars slow to come out

IT WAS a slow start for the Garfield
girls this week with the Nar Nar Goon
defence dominating in the first quarter.
The Stars attack struggled to find
space under extensive pressure from the
defence and only scored three goals to 10
at the first break.
Jade Dawes and Laura Petch showed
strength in the second quarter but the
Garfield attack still struggled.
After half-time, the Stars saw more of
the play but Nar Nar Goon’s floating play
ers still dominated.
The final quarter was the Stars’ best
with all players taking on board the
coach’s instructions and the team outscor
ing the opposition by three goals.
Score: Nar Nar Goon 30 d Garfield 18

B GRADE
THE match started with a low-scoring
first quarter but Garfield down by six
goals.
A significant number of unforced
errors and turnovers by the Stars defend
ers in the second quarter saw Nar Nar
Goon stretch the lead to 10 goals by half-
time.
The Stars saw plenty of the ball in the
goal ring but didn’t manage to convert the
chances on the scoreboard.
Fresh legs by the opposition in the
third quarter saw the game pick up pace
and in the hot weather Nar Nar Goon
played a much better game.
By the fourth quarter the accurate
shooting and fast plays saw the game out
of reach for the Stars, despite a concerted
effort by all players.

Matthews, Bianca Collis, Laine Eastwell.
C GRADE
NAR Nar Goon ran away with the
match from the first quarter, outscoring
Garfield 10 goals to two.
A second-quarter burst saw the Stars
improve slightly on their score, but too
many unforced errors, particularly in
passing, meant the girls were down 21-6 at
half-time.
Defensively, the Stars kept the pres
sure on, but in attack they were often
unable to take advantage of great opportu
nities, particularly around the ring.
In the second half, the Stars managed
only five goals to Nar Nar Goon’s 18.
Score: Nar Nar Goon 39 d Garfield 11
Awards: Chloe Edwards (BOC), Jessie

scored only two goals to Nar Nar Goon’s
13 in the first quarter, despite a great dis
play of teamwork and some excellent pass
ing.
In the second quarter some positional
changes made an immediate impact.
The players seemed to gel better in
their new on-court roles and were more
accurate with their goaling, outscoring the
opposition by two goals for the quarter.
By the third quarter, Nar Nar Goon
had got going again and finished off
strong with nine goals to the Stars’ five.
By the final whistle, a heat-exhausted
Garfield team had missed too many oppor
tunities and went down by 20 points.

strong Nar Nar Goon side and kept with

defence matched it well with the fast
goalers and kept up the pressure while
Rosie Matthews had a good game both in
goals and defence.
Despite a back injury, Emma Masal
played a good game and in offence Ashlee
Vitiriti did a good job in the goal ring.
