Gotta hand it to him!

By Melissa Meehan
TWO Beaconhills College students have been selected for the Top Design Exhibition at the Melbourne Museum.
Nathan Ide, Year 12 Valley Campus student, designed and constructed an automatic robotic hand in three parts, a sensor, a controller unit and the hand itself.
The ‘hand’ has been chosen as one of the top two works for systems engineering students across the state.
The ‘hand’ and video footage of Nathan demonstrating his piece and discussing the design process forms part of the Top Design Exhibition from 27 March to 27 June at the Melbourne Museum.
Village Campus student Nicole Malishev has also had her folio selected to be on display at the museum as one of 262 folios that were submitted for consideration in the category of Visual Communication and Design.
Nicole’s folio presented sketches of dress shoes from observations that she completed during her Unit 3 and 4 studies in Year 11.
Top Design showcases a representative sample of work by Victoria’s VCE students.
Works include furniture and objects made using wood, metal or plastic, garments and articles using fibre, yarn and fabric, graphic and product design, short films, interactive media, publishing, photography, food, mechanical and electronic projects.
The exhibition not only features the final product, but also its development.
