Market’s hefty heifer sales

ANOTHER small yarding of grown cattle was penned after a long weekend at VLE Pakenham, and the quality was quite mixed.
Despite the small number, and the lack of quality at times, demand was strong and prices for all grades of cattle were higher.
The usual contingent of buyers were present and the short supply led to the stronger demand.
There was only a few small pen lots of better quality bullocks in the offering of 179 head.
These sold well making from 178 cents to 181.6 cents and were three cents to five cents per kilogram dearer.
The balance of the yarding were plainer shape bullocks, or manufacturing bullocks that made from 159 cents to 176 cents, and this was up to seven cents per kilogram dearer.
Demand was strong throughout the penning of 287 cows. This was despite some poor quality.
Competition was very good for younger cows or heifers, and if it looked like a heifer, sounded like a heifer or walked like one, prices were very good.
The best quality heifer made 176 cents with numerous others from 158 cents to 168 cents per kilogram.
Better quality cows made between 144 cents and 157 cents and, along with the heifers, were three cents to six cents per kilogram dearer.
Demand for the plainer condition 1 and 2 score cows, which saw all make from 118 cents to 143 cents per kilogram.
As some of these have little potential for good dressing percentage of some of these sales were up to 11 cents per kilogram dearer.
The carcass weight price average was estimated to be 292 cents per kilogram.
