Senior Wickers put through their paces

BERWICK Netball Club’s three senior teams played Keysborough in an away round on the weekend while the junior teams had a weekend to rest up and stay out of the wind and rain.

Berwick’s A Grade took on Keysborough in blustery conditions, and after a slow start Berwick managed to be only five goals down at half time. Sarah, Peta and Tara’s drive onto the ring was fantastic demonstrating their pre-season training and fitness was starting to pay off.
Keysborough’s defence proved tough for Mel and Bianca who continued to work hard to score. An injury allowed for the young gun Tayla Shannon to come in to goal shooting, and after a nervous start she pulled herself and Berwick back into the match with great movement and drive into the goal ring.
A one-goal deficit at three-quarter time gave Berwick a sniff of a win with Jodie, Julie and Tess’s defence providing multiple turn-overs, however our slow start proved too hard to over come.
Score: Keysborough 35 d Berwick 31.
Best: Melissa English.
Anzac Day Medallist: Jodie Cranston.

The Berwick and Keysborough match was tipped to be a close and hard-fought encounter and it didn’t disappoint. Nothing separated the two teams at quarter time.
Berwick nudged ahead early in the second quarter but Keysborough’s accurate shooters kept them in the game as they came fighting back in the dying minutes. Berwick managed to hold on to a one-goal lead at the main break.
The third quarter saw Berwick’s wing defence, Renee Gill, shut down Keysborough’s main playmaker by dominating her opponent and creating turnovers. Berwick settled in attack as mid-courters Virginia and Stef patiently worked the ball around the circle as goalers Bree and Lynne battled against some very tall defenders. Their eye in helped Berwick win the quarter to be ahead 32-24.
The final quarter was played hard and fast and Berwick took a two-goal lead. Round three will see us endure the ‘Battle of the Creek’ where we are aiming to put together four consistent quarters of netball.
Score: Berwick 45 d Keysborough 35.
Best: Renee Gill.

@BT Sub Sport Gaz:C GRADE

This week Berwick’s C Grade took their season to a new level with a second-round win over a tough Keysborough side.
The team put in a solid effort showing that they could indeed overcome an older and perhaps wiser opposition.
Once again they had the opportunity to try out some different combinations, with the defensive end providing solid pressure throughout. The mid-court also did well moving the ball swiftly out of defence.
The wind made it difficult for the Berwick goalers to shoot accurately from a long range, but the girls persisted by feeding the ball around the ring and working it in closer to the post, demonstrating great composure and patience.
It was another fantastic win that will indeed prove to be valuable preparation for this week’s clash against rivals Beaconsfield.
Score: Berwick 29 d Keysborough 21.
Best: Louise Cary.
