Eagles claim cup honours

BEACONSFIELD’S A Grade girls were determined to redeem themselves after their loss to Pakenham last week, and came out playing a tough and determined style of netball in the first quarter getting a well-planned lead going into the second quarter.
Bridget, Sarah and Kylie played a very tight game in defence creating many turnovers which the girls needed to capitalise on.
Jasmine and Kelly continually worked hard provided options all over the court as well as some very impressive intercepts.
With a drop in concentration and a few missed goals the third quarter Regan and Jacinta dug deep, regained their composure and both had a great final quarter to finish the game in style.
Berwick showed they are a much improved side and a real contender come finals but Beacy happily retained the ‘Battle of the Creek’ cup.

The Beaconsfield girls were off to a reasonable start; trying to rekindle the drive and pressure of the game against Tooradin. Beacy improved their court flow but were countered by Berwick’s press on the ball out of defence. The team is slowly coming together and with less turnovers and better finishing off they would have had a closer result.

Beaconsfield started the game with great intensity and for three quarters maintained the lead. Fatigue showed in the last, allowing Berwick to take the lead. Thanks to a pooch toilet stop pausing the game, the Beacy girls regrouped, put the pressure on and second efforts from the defence end in the last minute helped the girls to get over the line by one goal. Best: Laura Denholm.

Beaconsfield’s first half against Berwick was not a flattering one, giving Berwick total control and being behind by 14 at half time. After a much-needed spray and some necessary changes going into the third quarter, the Eagles girls take control of the game, fighting back hard, bringing the gap back to only seven. In the last, the girls kept the momentum but could not get the last three goals. Special mention to Bessie O’Sullivan, an under-15, who came on and gave the defensive pressure required to get the Beaconsfield team back in the game.

Beaconsfield anticipated a challenging match playing top-of-the-ladder Berwick on Saturday. Four quarters of strong netball highlighted the strengths of each Beacy player as they started to play as a team on the court. Gemma Stacey played a pivotal role controlling the centre, Caitlin Utting provided much needed drive out of defence and Elise Flannery proved accuracy is the key. Congratulations to Kaela Hughes on her effort to shut down one of Berwick’s big play makers and Danielle Cameron for getting hands to many loose balls. Georgia Sheers was again, effective in her role as wing attack, and a flawless first half by Bessie O’Sullivan resulted in many Beacy turnovers.
Sophie Abel moved extremely well in goals and Erin Tippett found some calm within, making better passing choices. Unfortunately Jazmin Valentine had to retire to the sidelines due to a finger injury.
With such a brilliant display of team netball, it was only fitting that Beacy walked away victors on this one.

The Beacy girls keep improving week-in week-out. They continued to try and work hard, the scoreboard unfortunately does not show this but the girls again applied some great pressure and played some great passages.
