Bitter loss for Warriors

PAKENHAM was hoping to reverse its first round buzzer-beating loss to the Warrandyte Venom when the two teams meet for the second time in Division 3 of Big V competition on Sunday.
A tough game saw the Venom inflict another hard-fought defeat on the Warriors.
The Warriors got off well to lead 10 to 8 after the first five minutes before the Venom started to exert its dominance, leading 21 to 16 at quarter time.
The Warriors pegged the Venom back in the second quarter on the back of Dale Taylor who sank three three-pointers to get within one point at half time.
The second half see-sawed as both teams gained a slight advantage only to have it dragged backed. At three-quarter time the scores were locked at 57 points each.
In the last quarter both sides were desperate to get the advantage but Warrandyte proved they wanted the win more, going out six points ahead 83 to 77.
It was another game where the Warriors’ foul trouble continued, handing the Venom 40 free throws to their own 23.
Next week they travel to Cranbourne where they must reverse their early season loss to get back on the winners’ list and make a run at the top four.

@BT Sub Sport Gaz:UNDER 16 BOYS

The Warriors under-16 boys were at home against the Camberwell Silvertails who made a strong start. Poor rebounding and good defensive work from Camberwell soon blunted the Warriors’ initiative.
Typical strong effort from Harris Wassylko kept the Warriors in the game. Some 10 minutes into the first half the Warriors were down by six points but structure returned to Pakenham’s game thanks to a better performance from Jordan East.
The home team still lacked penetration in attack but a lovely three-pointer from Casey Wassylko brought the Warriors to within five points at half time.
The second half began more evenly with Jordan East, Casey and Harris Wassylko, and Brent and Trent Westwood pushing hard in defence, and some Harris magic getting the Warriors to within three points.
The Warriors took the lead at the 12 minute mark for the first time in the game. With 10 minutes to go, strong defence from the starting five began to change the ebb and flow of the game with the Warriors up by six points.
Substitutes Raff Dall and Barak Remali joined the frayand the team pressed to lead by 15 points at the four minute mark.
With two minutes to go Jordan and Casey took a well-earned rest as the Warriors cantered to a comfortable 14-point win, 42 to 28.

The two under-16 girls had different results with the bottom-age girls getting home easily against Southern Peninsula 40 points to 20, while the top-age girls struggled against Frankston going down by two points, 32 to 34.
The girls struggled all night and only started to get their game together in the final five minutes.

@BT Sub Sport Gaz:UNDER 14 BOYS

The under-14 boys were looking to continue their winning streak as they travelled to Pearcedale to take on ladder-leaders Westernport.
The Warriors started very well with Liam Malcolm and Isaac Munns dominating the boards in both attack and defence as well as making shooting for goal very difficult for Westernport.
There was some excellent teamwork in the first half with Lucas Handley (6 points), Liam Tyrrell (6) and Clarrie Dipnall (4) and Mitchell Allen all playing excellent basketball.
A couple of early three pointers from Matt D’Arcy (13) and some great inside shots from Isaac (10) gave the Warriors a handy 15-point lead at halftime.
The second half though turned into a very defensive game with both teams struggling to put any score on the board.
Westernport’s zone defence tightened, but they were unable to peg back the Warriors’ lead.
Westernport won the second half, but not the game with the Warriors holding on with a good nine-point win against the top team.
Scores: Pakenham 39 d Westernport 30.
