Quality cattle lift prices

A GENERALLY better quality yarding of young cattle was presented to the trade buyers than the past few weeks at the Victorian Livestock Exchange with a number of supplementary fed vealers and yearlings penned.
Vealer steers were four cents to nine cents per kilogram dearer, reflecting the lift in quality.
Yearling steers and heifers also followed this price trend.
The grown steers yarded were also dearer by two cents to four cents per kilogram.
The significantly better quality of vealers saw the top B3 steers make 233 cents per kilogram.
High yielding B and C muscle score pens were consistently making in excess of 200 cents per kilogram.
Heavy C3 vealer steers made from 182 cents to 220 cents per kilogram to average 204 cents per kilogram, which was four cents per kilogram dearer.
Heavy C2 scores averaged 199 cents per kilogram to be up to eight cents per kilogram dearer.
Feedlotters were also active as were backgrounders. Feedlotters were willing to bid up to 190 cents per kilogram, but mostly paid 178 cents to 185 cents per kilogram.
Heavy C3 and C4 yearling steers made from 176 cents to 200 cents to average 186 cents per kilogram which was firm to seven cents per kilogram dearer.
The 160 grown steers yarded saw medium weight C4 pens make from 180 cents to 188 cents to average 186 cents per kilogram, which was an increase of two cents to three cents per kilogram on last week’s rates.
