Kangaroo butchered

A MUTILATED kangaroo carcass found in Upper Beaconsfield on Sunday may be the second victim of illegal hunters.
The animal, which had been skinned and butchered, has striking similarities to the deer carcasses discovered in Gembrook last month.
A Pakenham Upper resident, who did not want to be named, said she was walking her dog on Sunday afternoon when she smelt the dead kangaroo.
“It was a really bad smell. At first I thought someone was burning rubbish,” she said.
“There was not much flesh left and no skin there. It was definitely not a natural event.”
The woman said the carcass had been dumped on the track in a place ‘clearly visible’ to walkers, near the intersection of Beaconsfield-Emerald and Stoney Creek Road.
“We do see the odd kangaroo or wallaby here killed on the side of the road, but it’s not that often,” she said.
“Whether it was killed and thrown there because someone was lazy, or it’s something a little more sinister, I’m not sure.”
Last month, the remains of a deer and her fawn were found skinned and headless near Gembrook’s Kurth Kiln Regional Park.
The carcasses were dumped close to the Gilwell Track and discovered by another dog walker.
Illegal hunters could face charges under the Wildlife and Firearm Acts.
