EMERGENCY crews say they are amazed the driver of a waste collection truck escaped without serious injury after his truck overturned in Berwick this week.
Police, ambulance and firefighters were called to Mansfield Street shortly after 11am on Monday, hearing initial reports that the driver was trapped in the truck.
Berwick Fire Brigade captain Alan Boyd said firefighters were relieved to find that the man had managed to escape from the cabin. “He was shaken but not seriously injured,” he said.
Captain Boyd said it was believed that the truck was heading along the old Princes Highway towards Narre Warren and turned into Mansfield Street, overturning moments later and bouncing on its side along the wrong side of the road.
“Thankfully there were no other vehicles in the path of the truck or the situation may have been quite different,” captain Boyd said.
Large amounts of diesel fuel and hydraulic oil from the truck spilled onto the road but the truck’s cargo of recycling material remaining intact.
