Gippsland League review – round 8

By Ken Moore
LEONGATHA’S form revival continued on Saturday when it overcame Drouin by seven points.
It was a tension filled game and was up for garbs until a late goal by Sam Sperling, his third, sealed victory for the visitors.
The Parrots were able to exert good pressure on the Hawk ball carriers and did not allow Drouin the time and space to create opportunities for a good deal of the game.
They had a good spread of contributors all over the field and a surprise packet emerged in thirds’ captain Nick Nagel, who kicked four first-half goals.
Leongatha can also thank Colin Sanbrook, Clint Johnston and Paul LePage for providing plenty of resilient defence.
For Drouin Pat McGrath was the lifeblood of the team and he had good support in and around the middle from Andy Soumilas, Daniel Barrand, ruckman Bob McCallum and Jay Barr in defence.
In only his second senior game Simon Gardner chimed in with some handy possessions and Damian Carmody filled roles in both defence and attack with good effect. It was Drouin’s third consecutive loss to Leongatha.
