PAKENHAM shoppers and business operators are being encouraged to use new off-street car parks and other existing car parks as preparations for the $80 million Woolworths Pakenham Place development gather momentum.
With construction expected to start in early July, mayor Graeme Legge said there were plenty of car parking spaces available.
“As well as existing parking around the CBD, the council has made extra off-street car parks with a total of 280 spaces available at locations including the corner of Henry Street and Cook Drive, corner of Henry and John streets and PB Ronald Reserve,” Cr Legge said.
“More spaces will be created in John Street, at the old police station site, within the next couple of months.”
The Cardinia Shire has negotiated a staged development of the construction area with Woolworths, in particular the Treloar Lane car park which will be progressively closed over a four-week period.
Cr Legge said people accustomed to parking in the Treloar Lane car park could still park their cars well within walking distance of the shops.
“These additional car parking spaces are clearly signed and are available in close proximity to the main shopping area,” he said.
“Throughout the process we will continue to work closely with Woolworths, the Pakenham Business Group, business operators and the wider community.”
Residents are advised to check signs before they park, as time restrictions apply in some areas.
A map highlighting new and existing off-street car parking areas in Pakenham has been distributed to Main Street business operators for their employees and customers and is also available at the council offices.
The Pakenham Marketplace development will deliver a new Woolworths supermarket, a Big W department store and specialty shops on a 2.9 hectare parcel of land bounded by John Street, Henry Street, Cook Drive and Treloar Lane.
The proposal is expected to create to 700 new jobs and 1108 car parking spaces – including underground car parking – in the heart of Pakenham, along with a host of shops.
Construction is expected to be completed by November next year.
