Numbers fall but prices rise

ANOTHER reduction in the number yarded at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, on Wednesday saw 150 less head than the previous week.
Prices were on the better side though as all recorded good rises.
One hundred and ninety four vealers rose nine cents to 206.8 cents, with several good pen lots of stores present attracting 252.6 cents for a pen of 12 head averaging 215 kilograms. Heavy vealers again sold strongly making to 241.6 cents.
Fifty six steers gained 3.5 cents to 181.9 cents with prices again in the 190 cents region as the top sale saw 192 cents offered for good Angus steers.
Forty three heifers jumped to a 176.6 cents average up five cents on last sale with the best making 195 cents.
Thirty one bullocks weighing in heavier on average to last week eased slightly on average to 176.9 cents back two cents, but the price per head increased $50 to $1114.
Thursday’s bull and cow sale was firm to dearer, with less head on offer bidding was strong across all pens.
Only 13 bulls were yarded with light weight among the collection, average price was five cents up at 149.2 cents and the top price was 165 cents.
A total of 269 cows rose three cents to 138.6 cents with average weight similar to last week.
The per head price was $5 better at $710, beef cows made to 166 cents with only two head making under the 100 cent mark.
