Change reaps mixed results

A CHANGE in supply, quality and competition was responsible for some mixed results at VLE Pakenham.
There were more cattle penned, and while some very good to top quality was yarded, there was a larger mixture of plain to medium quality cattle offered. To top this off, demand was weaker, and, at times, there was less competition with feedlots not purchasing as many.
Also affecting the outcome was weaker demand from some of the regular wholesalers. While all of this sounds harsh, the best quality vealers, supplementary fed yearlings, light weight vealers and heavy steers all sold at unchanged rates. Other cattle were two cents to eight cents per kilogram cheaper.
The highest price of the day was again for supplementary fed yearlings that made 240 cents per kilogram. Other good quality vealers and fed yearlings made between 195 cents and 220 cents per kilogram. Without strong feedlot demand, most other vealers and lighter weight yearlings made between 170 cents and 195 cents per kilogram. There were 200 vealers and 750 yearlings penned. Because the quality was not as good, a number of D muscle cattle made between 135 cents and 175 cents per kilogram.
Demand remained strong for heavy yearling steers, grown steers and bullocks, all selling at unchanged rates. Because of some top quality being offered, the top price was higher at 194 cents with most sales being from 178 cents to the top figure. Grown heifers varied in prices, making anywhere from 148 cents to 174 cents per kilogram depending on breeding and quality.
