Mixed yard sees varying quality

A MIXED yarding of 438 head on Wednesday last week at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, saw varying quality among the pens.
Overall the sale saw a larger amount of the lighter quality head compared to recent weeks. This effected most categories with only steers managing a rise.
Bullocks remained steady making to 190 cents and averaged 174.5 cents while 57 heifers being hit the most slipping eight cents to 167.6 cents and managed a top of 187.6 cents.
One hundred extra steers saw 171 offered and rose three cents to 183 cents to top at 208 cents. A total of 117 vealers sold strongly in the better end making to 240 cents, with a good 20 per cent making over the 200 cent mark. Very light veal eased the average four cents to 186.9 cents.
Five hundred and thirty one head yarded on Thursday last week with good heavy cows penned, mid range cows showed less quality and pulled the average back 1.5 cents to 140.9 cents.
Light cows last week sold to very good demand as did heavy beef cows, lifting the top to 189.2 cents.
Bulls slipped in price and quality easing two cents to 165.1 cents. Although the better end saw prices reach 185 cents, only nine bullocks were penned, but demand lifted the average eight cents to 168.6 cents with bullocks making to 180 cents.
