She did some voluntary work soon after and watched the group blossom before her eyes.
Since then, the children have had the opportunity to go to many places.
“We had two or three buses by then and the kids had a wonderful outlook into normal life,” she said.
“We went up to Bendigo, went to the beach on Phillip Island, went tobogganing in the snow, and went to the Melbourne Museum. We travelled by bus, train, ships and boats.”
Mrs Kaye said it was wonderful to see the kids all out in the community.
“We had some students at the consolidated school, and had a room at the high school, where a teacher integrated them with normal kids,” she said.
The highlight of her experience at Minibah was what the kids got out of it. “We took the children horse riding, and the photos are just absolutely magnificent,” she said.
The swimming sessions the children had led the staff to building the first heated swimming pool in Pakenham.
“We went everywhere from Dandenong to Cranbourne, which was the instigation for us to build a pool in the Pakenham Consolidated School,” Mrs Kaye said.
“I had a wonderful 16 years there. Some of the students there I still know and they still recognise me.
“We had some wonderful teachers. too, they were all very dedicated.
“Outlook will always be Minibah to me.”
