1950s style on show

THREE very different retro styles were judged the most stylish of the day in the hotly contested Most Elegant Lady category.
Sydneysider Tanya Lazarou was crowned the winner, in a ’50s style dress and hat handmade by noted vintage-inspired milliner Sandie Bizys.
Ms Lazarou said she didn’t attend races just for the fashion – she was also a keen punter.
“I have competed around the place. I love fashion, but I love the races too,” she said.
“I backed the Melbourne Cup winner this year and last year as well.”
Ms Lazarou was cheered on by a vocal section of the crowd, who she had only met moments before at the bookies.
“I have met so many people here, and made some new friends. Everyone is really friendly,” she said.
She was also impressed with the standards on the catwalk.
“Undeniably, the 1950s are back with a vengeance,” she said.
“We are going back to ladylike dressing … you can’t beat the classics.”
Berwick resident Tegan Steele, also one-half of the best-dressed couple, was runner-up.
Third placegetter Angelina Morino, also from Berwick, looked stunning in a true vintage piece.
Her A-line dress had a sweetheart neckline with asymmetrical detail.
“My mum bought it in Paris in the ’70s,” she said.
She accessorised with a large black flower and black clutch bought from markets.
