Darcy’s gong

IT is a long way from the paddocks of Clyde to the surf of Cape Paterson, but it’s thanks to people like Darcy Manks that our coastal surf life saving clubs are going so well.
Darcy, 20, became involved with the Cape Paterson Surf Life Club (CPSLC) more than five years ago while a student at Kooweerup Secondary College.
To encourage young people to become lifesavers, the club recruited students to attend its annual Bronze Medal Camp – a five-day intensive training course at Cape Paterson which teaches sea rescue, equipment use, first aid and other skills to qualify as a lifesaver.
A keen Darcy is among those who have joined, and he’s been hooked ever since.
CPSLC president Dean Manns said Darcy was an asset to the club.
“He is one of those who got involved in school and really took off. Since joining he has become involved in all aspects of the club and currently holds the position of IRB (inshore rescue boats) captain, taking charge of the care, maintenance and training with the boats,” Mr Manns said.
“He is also a patrol captain where he oversees the management of the beach patrol and a Bronze Medal instructor. Darcy has been an absolute asset for our club – a young, motivated person with a great deal of common sense and responsibility.”
In recognition of his commitment to CPSLC, Mr Mann and club captain Jess Bowman nominated Darcy for the Bass Electorate Community Service Award, which recognises those in the community who give their time for the benefit of others.
Presenting the award in front of his peers and family, Bass MP Ken Smith said Darcy’s commitment was outstanding.
“Since joining the club Darcy has given around 700 hours of his time patrolling Cape Paterson’s surf beach to help ensure that visitors and locals can safely enjoy the beautiful but at times treacherous coastal waters,” Mr Smith said.
“For a young man who lives about an hour away and is studying hard to become a nurse and paramedic, this commitment is outstanding.”
