Lighter cattle force down yard

THERE was an unexpected easing in prices at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, last Wednesday as lighter conditioned cattle represented a larger proportion of the yarding.
Bullocks sold to good demand but fell short of last week’s prices easing seven cents to 171.5 cents and a top price of 184 cents for the 77 penned.
Fifty two heifers also took a fair hit, slipping 11 cents to 162.4 cents.
Weights were up on last week but again condition was lighter.
The 51 one steers offered were in the higher end of the weight scale with very little stores available on the day. The steer average was 13 cents back at 168.01 cents and the top was 187.6 cents.
Two hundred and forty three veal failed to make the highs of recent sales settling for 226 cents. The average was nine cents easier at 189.4 cents.
The only calves to make more were two sub 200 kilogram stores in very good nick making 234.6 cents to restockers.
Good solid bulls penned this Thursday and all sold to good demand, lifting the average three cents to 161 cents and a very handy top of 178 cents.
Three hundred and forty cows sold also and the reaction was mixed with beef and heavy dairy cows pushing the price, but were restrained by the light quality smaller cows which for the first time in several weeks managed to contain some head which failed to make the 100 cent mark.
Cows this week topped at 162 cents and the average eased to 141.6 cents.
The draw for Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 November is as follows: 1, Scotts; 2, Gibbon; 3, Elders; 4, SEJ; 5, Landmark.
