High prices continue

GOOD rains and plenty of feed have held back yard numbers over the past several months at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, and with restockers and feedlotters prominent at the sales, and processors pressing for enough stock, prices have kept very strong.
The trend continued again this week in a larger yarding of 667 head.
Ninety-three bullocks sold to strong demand and rose eight cents to 173.6 and reached a very handy top of 198.6.
Forty-three heifers eased two cents, but better quality and weight brought heifers in at a per head price of $753, which was $50 more on last week’s sale.
Heifers this week made to 194.2.
Ninety-one steers saw a good rise of four cents to 179.6, again quality was good with steers making to 198.6.
A total of 420 veal managed to remain firm on last sale, repeating an average of 204.1.
Weights were slightly lighter but condition was good, processor veal made to 230.6 and store calves sold to excellent demand as restockers and feedlotters competed.
This saw a pen of 10 steer calves averaging 214 kilograms sell to 268.6 cents per kilo.
The good prices continued on Thursday with gains in all categories.
Twenty-nine bulls gained two cents to 156.1 and saw a good top price of 177.2.
