Netball stalwart loved her sports

LORNA was born in Old Mine Road, Korumburra, in 1918 to Margaret and J. J. Jackson who was a coal miner, until the family moved to Pakenham in 1927 when they purchased the local bakery and grocery store in Main Street.
Lorna had four brothers, Johnny, Clive, Ray (‘Cracker’) and Normie (‘Widow’) (all deceased); and eight sisters, Essie, Thelma, Bertha, Dilly, Marie and Joyce (all deceased), Dorothy who lives in Bendigo and Margaret in Newcastle.
Lorna attended Pakenham State School until she was 13 when she left school to work in the family business and to look after her three younger sisters Dorothy, Joyce and Margaret – which prevented her from fulfilling her dream of becoming a school teacher.
She loved sport, either watching her brothers Cracker and Widow playing football for Pakenham or playing tennis or netball herself.
Living next-door to King’s theatre played a big part in Lorna’s youth. She attended balls and dances held there – as did her brothers and sisters, the girls in their beautiful gowns – and would dance the night away to swing band music.
In 1939, Lorna along with Brydie Cunningham and Edie Pumphrey formed the inaugural West Gippsland Netball Association, of which she was secretary.
Over the years Lorna held numerous positions in administration with-in the league and Pakenham.
Lorna was the first Pakenham Netball Club president and also played in the premiership that same year.
She received life-membership from both the West Gippsland Netball League and Pakenham club, which she was very proud of and held close to her heart.
The dispersion of West Gippsland was a sad day for Lorna along with many other people.
Lorna married Harry Anderson, a farmer, in 1943 and lived on the family farm on the corner of Army Road and Princes Highway in Pakenham where she milked cows along with Harry until 1958.
They then moved to Thomas Street, Pakenham, along with her three children Russell, Rosslyn and Jan.
Lorna had many loves in her life, none more than going to watch her beloved football team – the Richmond Tigers.
