WGTA JUNIOR TWILIGHT TOURNAMENT
JUNIOR dynamos on the rise took to the courts around West Gippsland for the annual West Gippsland Tennis Association Junior Twilight Tournament held this year at Officer, Tynong and Lang Lang Tennis Clubs.
Among those testing their doubles’ talents this year were 43 juniors with a dozen players competing in the Section 1 and 2 tournaments at Tynong, 18 players participating in the Sections 3 and 4 tournament at Officer and 13 players in the Section 5 and 6 juniors Round Robin format at Lang Lang.
Sections 1 and 2 was claimed by Lang Lang’s Stewart Bisset and Brad Russell, with runners-up Ryan Archer and Riley McDonald narrowly beaten into second. All matches were very close with the winning team, runners-up and Max and his partner Phillip Bezzina all finishing on 12 points, followed closely by Oscar and Daniel Kortholt on 11 points. A round robin tie breaker was held to separate the top three with Brad and Stewart winning in a very tight and hard-fought battle over Ryan and Riley with Max and Phillip coming in a close third. The games were all played in a great spirit of friendly rivalry and good sportsmanship all round. Thanks to Phil Harrison for organising teams and the Tynong Tennis Club for hosting the tournament.
Sections 3 and 4 champions were Candice Chapple from Maryknoll and Sam Mascadri from Lang Lang with second place going to Rebecca Kay and Reece Asmus from Lang Lang. An excellent entry list of eighteen players from Lang Lang, Tynong, Bunyip, Maryknoll and Officer participated with a large number of family members giving welcome support. Competition was keen but friendly. Congratulation to the winners Mascadri and Chapple who made a very strong doubles combination. Sam should be very pleased with his efforts being a first year player. Runners up were Lang Lang’s Rebecca Kay and Reece Asmus. Rebecca and Reece normally play in different sections on Saturdays but enjoyed being paired with each other for the event. Thank you to Officer Coach Chris Millidonis for his hospitality and his parents Danny and Jenny for ensuring the club rooms and lawn were presented so well.
In Section 5 and 6, winners were Catani’s Jay Verhagen and Yannathan’s Alisha Fielder while the runners-up were Catani’s Kyle Cooper and Yannathan’s Ben Coleman.
