KATE Shearer is living up to her surname and shaving her head for a worthy cause.
After eight years involved in the Relay for Life, the Pakenham teenager decided to just “do it”.
The 16-year-old is no stranger to cancer in her life after she lost her aunt to cancer and her cousin’s girlfriend shaved her head at the 2012 Casey-Cardinia Relay for Life.
“She said last year, ‘right, I’m doing it’,” her mum Kerri said.
“She has the most beautiful long naturally blonde hair. We have even had people offer to pay for her to keep it but she is determined it is going.”
Kate is hoping to raise $5000, which will be donated to the Casey-Cardinia Relay for Life, and she is due to lose her locks at the event on Saturday 16 March.
“She is very determined,” Kerri said.
“We are so proud of her. We’ve been part of the event for eight years and we really want to get awareness out there and raise money.”
Kate’s hair will be cut by the family’s long time hairdresser, who was diagnosed with breast cancer only two months ago.
“I am going to cry, I am going to be hopeless,” Kerri said.
“It will be emotional for everybody.”
Kate is also visiting her old school, Officer Primary School, on Friday to speak to students on their Crazy Hair Day.
The school is fundraising and has asked her to attend and raise awareness with the students.
