KUDOS to Bevan Lee, the creative force behind Channel 7’s new period drama A Place To Call Home.
This big budget romantic drama is set in 1953 and tells the story of the complex and enigmatic nurse Sarah Adams (Marta Dusseldorp) who returns to Australia after the death of her half-brother.
On her journey home Sarah encounters the affluent Bligh family who she later comes to know quite well after accepting a job in the town of Inverness, the beautiful country town where the family reside.
Sarah makes an instant connection with widower George (Brett Climo), his fresh-faced daughter Anna (Abby Earl) and daughter-in-law Olivia (Arianwen Parkes-Lockwood).
However, when Sarah becomes embroiled in one of the Bligh family secrets, she is forever held at arm’s length by the matriarch of the family, Elizabeth Bligh (Noni Hazlehurst).
While Sarah is battling memories of World War II in Europe, she endeavours to make a fresh start in a society that is struggling with the social and political turmoil of 1950s Australia.
Thrown into the mix is the local doctor, Jack Duncan (Craig Hall), who has his own secrets.
More secrets about family, ethnicity and sexuality all play a role in this captivating Aussie drama, which succeeds in portraying a period style story with a modern and refreshing twist.
