CARDINIA’S Biggest Morning Tea at the town’s recreation reserve has a special significance.
Glenn Hamilton from Cranbourne said his sister Diane ran the event in its early years following her cancer diagnosis.
Diane passed away three years ago in July, and the morning tea is still one of the biggest in the shire.
More than 130 people turned out for the event last Thursday, now in its ninth year.
Glenn also battled Hodgkin’s lymphoma at age 16, and in 1979 was given the all clear. The event has a special meaning for him and his family, as well as the community in which Diane lived.
“One year we held it in Tooradin, but we had 250 people turn up,” Glenn said.
At the event there were dozens of hand-made items, pillows, quilts and everything in between. There was also an auction where attendees bid on items to help raise money for the Cancer Council.
“People come from all over to attend the event,” Glenn said.
“We have people from Tooradin and as far away as Oakleigh, it’s great to see so many people supporting it.”
This year’s event raised $7500 for the Cancer Council.
Roxanne Taranto, Diane’s daughter, said her mum would have been rapt with that the local event was still going on.
“It was really good and it all ran smoothly, all of the fruit and vegetables for sale were sold on the day and 95 per cent of the items at the stall were sold too and the auction was a hit,” she said.
“Last year we raised about $5650 so it was great to see the increase.”
