Beauties, geeks and guffaws

Beauty and the Geek
Channel 7
Thursdays 8.30pm

THE comedic genius of Beauty and the Geek is back on our screens, much to the dismay of some.
No one could argue that it is a show for everyone – as my family coughed and spluttered in disbelief while I was doubled over in laughter on Thursday night (although there were a few moments when even they couldn’t hold in their laughter).
It is pure indulgence for those of us who appreciate the show and the pure nativity of both beauty and geek, although in very different areas.
There were many moments on the premiere of the new season which had me holding my belly and coping sideway looks – far too many to mention.
Any good review of Thursday night episode can not go past the confusion of tentacles and testicles (how many testicles does an octopus have?) and pure discomfort of a geek as a beauty unpacked her lacy undergarments (are g-strings legal?).
The episode itself was pure Beauty and Geek, with the removal of creature comforts for the first three nights, sending the beauties in a spin over the lack of mirror, electricity and beds.
Surprisingly, though, they still managed to look thoroughly made-up the morning after meaning they are more skilled at make-up than the average women or the stylists were still around the lend a hand.
Unfortunately, the ‘English’ beauty challenge, where the beauties were asked to spell words to save their geeks from pants full of crabs, was very unfair with one beauty asked to spell ‘survivor’ compared to ’phosphorescence’.
Despite the obvious enjoyment that Beauty and the Geek brings to our lives, there were definite elements of the new season which will get very annoying very quickly.
Let’s start with Bella. Wow! Her high-pitched voice, and weird combination of a New Zealand and British accent is enough to send anyone to the looney bin – let’s hope she isn’t around for long.
And here is a tip for new host James Tobin – it is a deserted island, not a desert island, they are very different things.
Even still, I can’t wait for this week’s instalment and the awkwardness that is to come and I watch it side-by-side with my family once again.
