OFFICER and Maryknoll secured bragging rights this week in West Gippsland Tennis Association’s Section 1 junior competition – besting lang Lang and Tynong respectively.
Jack Stilton was too strong for Lachlan Barwick in the first rubber 6-3 before Lang Lang’s Hayley Wildes – better known to Gazette readers as one of Cranbourne’s star Youth Girls footballers – partnered up with Stewart Bissett to claim the second rubber over the Amy Fisher/Erin Tivendale combination 6-2.
Officer fought back to take the next two rubbers via Fisher and Stilton/Tivendale before Bissett kept the match alive with a win over Tivendale 6-3 in the fifth rubber. The final match went Officer’s way as Skilton/Fisher knocked off Barwick/Wildes 6-4 to claim the match 4-29 to 2-26.
In the other Section 1 match, Maryknoll comfortably knocked off Tynon 5-34 to 1-21, with Tynong’s only win coming from Joseph Garner in the first rubber against Oscar Tweedale. From there, Tweedale, Lachlan Carney and Max Tweedale ran riot over Tynong to take out the match with five straight wins.
SECTION 2
A WHITEWASH and two big wins was the final conclusion drawn from Section 2 as Bunyip White, Catani and Maryknoll all strolled to easy victories. Bunyip Blue can consider itself unlucky in its 1-27 to 5-36 loss to Catani as most matches were competitive. Liam Lenders claimed Bunyip’s only win – a 7-5 triumph over Daniel Kortholt first up – before the remaining matches went Catani’s way.
SECTION 3
Contrasting fortunes for Lang Lang in Section 3 as the Black side beat Bunyip 5-32 to 1-14, but on the flipside the Gold were pummelled 0-13 to 6-37 by Tynong. Zack Souter and Kyle Loveridge fought hard, with Loveridge pushing Bernadette Bezzina to a 7-6 tiebreak victory. Lang Lang Black wasn’t troubled by Bunyip, with all matches comfortably taken by three games or greater.
SECTION 4
Bunyip squeaked home to victory over Lang Lang Black, winning the final rubber 6-1 via doubles team Mackenzie Warren and Alex Price to claim a 3-32 to 3-25 win. Yannathan pumped Lang Lang Gold 6-37 to 0-12 and Maryknoll similarly thrashed Tynong 6-36 to 0-17.
SECTION 5
Kooweerup claimed an easy win over Bunyip Blue 5-39 to 1-27 and Lang Lang had a walkover against Bunyip White 6-36 to 0-12. Tynong forfeited to Nar Nar Goon.
