PAKENHAM Arthritis Self-Help Group celebrated its 25th anniversary last week, bringing together the arthritis community across the region.
To mark the milestone, members of self-help groups from surrounding regions including Cranbourne, Warragul and Narre Warren attended the luncheon on Wednesday 18 May.
Gail Page of MOVE, previously Arthritis Victoria, said she was impressed by the amount of community interest in the Pakenham group.
“I’ve seen lots of groups struggling for numbers. This group has over 100 members,” Ms Page said.
“Arthritis affects people of all ages and we’ve found that often there are not many young members in these groups seeking the support they need.
“Young people try to hide their arthritis so we’re trying to raise more awareness.”
Federal candidate for McMillan Russell Broadbent said his mother had been heavily involved with Pakenham’s arthritis group.
He said he had known some members of the arthritis community for years and noticed photos of his mother in the slideshow presentation.
Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to long-time members Katrina Roob and Jan Fenton for their continued commitment to the group.
“These ladies work very hard and deserve the recognition,” president Anne Dunn said.
“They can always be found in the kitchen cooking up a storm at all of our social functions.
“They’ve cooked for morning teas, afternoon teas and even Christmas lunches and have done all the catering themselves.”
Committee member Rose Kealy said the group water exercises helped her arthritis symptoms.
“I have rheumatoid arthritis so it affects my wrists, ankles and knees,” Ms Kealy said.
“The water exercises are really good because I can do the exercises for longer. The water helps support your limbs.
“There is also a chair option for people who are unable to go in the water to do the exercises.
“It’s definitely beneficial. If I miss a week, you can notice the difference.”
The group also hosts a number of social events throughout the year including the mid-year luncheon, a Christmas outing, bus trips, music nights at the Culture Centre and fundraisers.
