ALMOST half the number of family violence abusers recorded as inflicting domestic pain and suffering in Cardinia Shire go on to commit similar violence in years to come.
And it seems those accused of violence had a history of it, according to the recidivist data recently released by Victoria Police.
Some 47 per cent of family violence perpetrators recorded for at least one family violence incident in the municipality in 2010/11 were found to have committed three or more further abusive attacks in the years leading to March last year.
The data, pulled from the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) paper Predictors of recidivism among police recorded family violence perpetrators, found 20 per cent of the abusers had recorded three or more family violence incidents over the four-year period.
Some 27.2 per cent recorded up to two further incidents in the south-east council area.
The data also found a significant number of perpetrators had a history of violence.
Almost 40 per cent of the family violence perpetrators recorded in 2010/11 were recorded as having abused before.
Some 12.5 per cent of the perpetrators had three or more abusive incidents marked against their name in the seven years prior, while 23.2 had one of two historical reports of violence.
The research paper looked at how different risk factors can predict recidivism, identified as gender, age, the alleged perpetrator’s relationship with the victim and history of contact with police and the criminal justice system.
State-wide, the report found those with three or more prior incidents were more than four times as likely to re-offend while those with one or more prior incidents were around twice as likely to re-offend compared to those with no prior incidents.
Those with a history of breaching family violence intervention order were more likely to be recorded for a recidivism incident.
Head of the Casey Family Violence Unit (CFVU) Sergeant Ian Lane said the typical family violence offender is male, aged 18 to 45 years old.
