Buyers cautious with exports

There were approximately 550 export and 430 young cattle penned representing an increase of 80 head week-on-week at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange.
The usual buying group was present and operating more selectively on the export grades in a mixed but generally firm market.
Quality declined with a plainer run of export cattle and a mixed selection of trade cattle containing some very good calves.
Vealers eased five cents to nine cents off last week’s highs. Yearling cattle to the trade sold mostly firm with the odd sale a little easier.
Grown steers and bullocks sold from firm to 12 cents cheaper with quality an issue. Heavy weight grown heifers eased eight cents.
Heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers slipped eight cents and the crossbred portion 14 cents.
Vealers to butchers sold from 332 cents to 366 cents, yearling trade steers made between 322 cents and 365 cents, yearling heifers to the trade sold between 290c and 357 cents, and grown steers made from 285 cents to 317 cents.
Bullocks sold from 292 cents to 315 cents, heavy weight grown heifers made between 260 cents and 290 cents, heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers sold between 220 cents and 249 cents with the crossbred portion between 252 cents and 300 cents.
The next store sale is on Thursday 9 March at 10am.
