At Officer Secondary College, students are taking the future of their school into their own hands.
As part of the school’s leadership team, about 100 Years 7 to 9 students are collaborating with staff on key decisions, while advocating on behalf of their fellow pupils.
Students’ reasons for joining the voluntary club include gaining leadership experience, helping people and assisting with the development of the school.
The group meets weekly to discuss what they want to see for the school’s six learning communities and are responsible for assisting with school events related to their learning groups.
One student, Harvey, said his team was recently responsible for the running of the school swimming carnival and finding students to participate in the events.
He said it was a great but challenging learning experience, particularly when he had to find last-minute replacement swimmers for some races.
“It was a lot of work on the day, but it was rewarding,” Harvey said.
All students up to Year 9 are eligible to apply for the leadership team, with the participants changing annually at the start of the school term.
