Pedalling his way through a gruelling 200-kilometre circuit of Cardinia shire, it was the thought of one little boy that kept Officer retiree Ian ‘Snowy’ Johnson going – nine-year-old Logan Edwards.
An avid bike rider, Snowy, a neighbour to one of Logan’s relatives, was participating in a fund-raiser to assist the Edwards family to convert their car to accommodate Logan’s wheelchair.
Logan was born with a chromosome one deletion which wasn’t picked up during pregnancy.
As a result he is unable to walk or talk.
Snowy, who has participated in a number of charity rides in the past, said when he learnt of the Edwards family’s struggles he knew he wanted to help.
“It all went from there,” Snowy said.
Having ridden four circuits of the region on Saturday – from Beaconsfield through Officer, Upper Beaconsfield and Toomuc Valley – Snowy said the 6.5 hour journey attracted a lot of interest from community members, friends and families.
While the total money raised is not yet known, Snowy described the appeal as “successful”.
“The family are quite happy about it, which is nice,” he said.
“And the weather was spot on, absolutely perfect, so it all worked out well.”
At the conclusion of Saturday’s fund-raiser, Snowy was joined by Logan and his family, his fellow Lifestyle Officer residents, and friends for a celebratory afternoon tea.
