WGCA Premier Grand Final – Day 1

Here were are again – back at the same venue, featuring the same sides as last year.

Kooweerup have won the toss and have elected to bat.

Play will begin at 1pm.

1:05 – Chris Smith snares the early wicket of Chris O’Hara, caught behind down leg side superbly by Rob Elston. 1/5. Ben Spicer joins Mark Cooper

1:20 – Cooper dropped at backward point – a very sharp chance off Paynter. 1/15.

1:35 – Cooper and Spicer ticking the run rate over against Paynter and Smith. 1/30 after nine overs.

1:45 – A couple of crunching boundaries from Spicer – a hook for six off Smith, and a cover drive for four off Paynter – has him going. 1/50 in the 14th.

1:50 – Tom Tyrrell replaces Smith from the Denhams Road end but can’t come off his regular run. In just his first over, he’s clearly still suffering from the groin injury he sustained last week. Williams replaces Paynter at the scoreboard end.

2:15 – Kooweerup 1/68 off 23. Tyrrell still pushing through.

2:25 – Kooweerup 2/71 off 27. Ramage replaces Spicer, who falls to a catch at mid-off by Smith off Williams

2:50 – Kooweerup 2/85 in the 36th. The combination of Tyrrell, Williams and Paynter have really dried up the runs, but Cooper remains – and looks particularly determined to make his innings count.

3:05 – Kooweerup 2/90 after 40. Cooper and Ramage look well set but are struggling to pierce the gaps. Tyrrell comes from the field as Cooper brings up his 50. Tyrrell has 9 overs, 0/14 to his name.

3:20 – McDermott’s spin replaces the line and length of Paynter just before tea, with Vela bowling at the scoreboard end. The Demons in the box seat here at the break – primed for an aggressive tilt in the second session. 2/99 off 46 overs at tea. Cooper 52*, Ramage 10*

3:50 – Cooper and Ramage showing signs of aggression after the break. 2/109 in the 48th. Vela and McDermott continuing.

4:00 – Cooper looking ominous now. Belts McDermott for consecutive pull shot sixes. 2/125 after 53.

4:10 – Ramage falls caught and bowled to McDermott for 20. Kooweerup 3/132. Chris Bright joins Cooper (75*).

4:20 – Kooweerup is 3/146 from 60 overs with the field spread.

4:35 – Kooweerup easily manipulating the field now, putting the foot down with seven wickets still in hand. Elston drops Cooper off McDermott. 3/165 off 64. Tyrrell returns for his second spell – still off two steps.

4:40 – Drinks. Kooweerup is 3/174 with 14 overs remaining in their innings.

5:00 – Mark Cooper brings up a sensational ton before being caught on the midwicket fence. 4/198 in the 72nd, with Cooper virtually chanceless until falling doing the selfless thing and trying to go large. The Lions will need something very special from here.

5:15 – More danger signs for Pakenham with Chris Bright nearing his 50 and looking to go large with Mathers. 4/229 in the 75th. Mathers with some incredibly destructive hitting.

5:25 – That was some seriously impressive power hitting from Bright,  who just fell LBW for 63. Cammarano continued where Mathers left off when he fell for a stunning 21. Kooweerup 6/255 in the 78th over. Matt Bright with a pull for four off his first ball too.

5:40 – And that ends a remarkable team batting performance in a Grand Final. After the stage was set before tea, they converted to finish on 7/275 from their 80 overs. Cooper top-scored with 101, while Chris Bright added 63.

DAY TWO

1:10 – Pakenham’s 0/5 after the first 10 minutes of their innings, with Chris Smith and Jack Anning at the crease. Kooweerup opening bowlers Jess Mathers and John Bright are bowling into a howling breeze

1:25 – Chris Smith falls caught and bowled to a spectacular one-handed catch from Mathers. 1/10

1:50 – Mathers strikes twice in an over – Chaplin and Jackson both caught behind. 3/17 in the 16th

2:25 – Mathers with another wicket – McDermott caught spectacularly at first slip by Matt Bright. Dom Paynter joins Anning. 4/22 after 25.

2:35 – Mathers’ purple patch continues – snares Paynter with a ridiculous diving caught and bowled. 5/23 after 29.

2:50 – Mathers takes his SIXTH – comprehensively bowling Anning. 6/32 after 32.

3:15 – Elston and Williams are counter-punching admirably – refusing to give in. 6/61.

3:45 – Mathers with his seventh wicket! Williams skies one to John Bright. 7/70 off 44 overs. Mathers with 7/26 off 21

4:05 – Sean Gramc falls to a top edge – caught by Chris Bright AGAIN off Mathers. He has all eight, 8/100.

4:15 – Mathers with his ninth wicket! 9/100. Mathers with 9/39.

4:35 – KOOWEERUP WINS! Pakenham’s dismissed for 126 and it’s PAUL BRIGHT who takes the final wicket, not Mathers, who finished with 9/49.
