Over a tonne of food was donated by a local school community to those in need.

Beaconhills College students, parents and staff have rallied a massive 1020kg of food to the Feed Melbourne appeal, which is around the equivalent of a fully-grown polar bear in weight.

The school’s Head of Citizenship and Service, Clare Tuohy, said the College was proud to be able to contribute to the appeal.

“Last year the Beaconhills community donated 850kg of food to Feed Melbourne, so this year’s effort was even better,” she said.

The donations go to Feed Melbourne’s partner FareShare, where they are turned into nutritious and healthy meals for distribution.

CEO of Feed Melbourne Katherine Gokavi-Whaley said it was an “amazing response” from the Beaconhills community and thanked everyone who contributed.

She said when 140,000 Victorians struggle to put a meal on the table at some time each month, “the whole community has to be part of the solution.”
