Police were shocked to discover a 22-year-old behind the wheel while under the influence of both alcohol and drugs on Sunday.

The Pakenham man was driving on the wrong side of the road in Kooweerup when he was intercepted by Cardinia Highway Patrol.

After questioning the motorist about his dangerous driving, a breath test and a tongue swap were administered.

He returned a reading of 0.119 and tested positive to having an illicit substance in his system

His vehicle was impounded and his license immediately suspended.

Officers believe the intervention prevented an inevitable collision.
