Victoria Police regularly respond to family violence incidents in Cardinia Shire, many that involve children.

They see first-hand the devastating impact this has on families and children.

“Victoria Police is part of a larger response system working hard to prevent and respond to family violence, as well as other associated crimes that often involve people who have been traumatised by family violence and not had the opportunity to heal,” said Tom Nairn, specialist investigation and support inspector for Victoria Police Southern Metro Region – Division 3.

“One of our roles is to uphold the law and hold perpetrators to account for their actions when a crime has been committed, and family violence is a crime.

“We, like other parts of the system, are continuously working on improving the way we work.

“We have improved family violence education and training at the Victoria Police Academy with the establishment of a dedicated Centre for Family Violence, we are in the process of introducing specialist Family Violence Investigation Units and are involved in more collaborative practices with family violence and children service providers.

“The last thing we want to see are families being broken apart. We just want people to feel safe and be safe and as police we are here to ensure that happens.”

Inspector Nairn has been a member of the Together We Can Governance Group since it began in 2015.

His role is to represent Victoria Police on the governance group and inform its operation and outcomes with a policing perspective.

He champions the goals of the Together We Can initiative, provides linkages, and negotiates pathways to Victoria Police services.

“The Cardinia Shire community should be very proud of this award,” Inspector Nairn said.

“It demonstrates a growing strength and resilience in the community with a willingness to support one another when times are difficult, and that people are brave enough to ask for support when they need it.”
