Strong winds warning

CFA is warning all Victorians to reconsider any planned burn-offs today following a severe weather warning for most of the state.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds for people in Central, Mallee, South West, North Central, West and South Gippsland, Wimmera and parts of East Gippsland, Northern Country and North East Forecast Districts.

CFA Chief Officer Steve Warrington noted that a number of burn-offs have already turned into grass and scrub fires today.

“This morning we’ve already seen a number of burn-offs get out of control forcing CFA to attend incidents that we really shouldn’t be,” Chief Officer Warrington said.

“The message is simple: if the winds are strong, cancel your burn and do it another day. It’s really not worth the risk.”
