Damaging winds are wreaking havoc across Pakenham with widespread power outages, train disruptions and road closures as gusts of up to 50km/h batter the region.

A severe weather warning has been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology, with motorists advised to slow down and take extra care on the roads.

More than 1000 homes in Gembrook are experiencing electricity outages due to power line damage, with service not expected to return until 6pm.The Pakenham line has also been suspended indefinitely, with buses replacing trains between Dandenong and Berwick due to a fallen tree on the track in Hallam.

V/Line Traralgon services to Southern Cross are terminating at Pakenham due to the same obstruction.

The remainder of the Pakenham Park Synthetic racing event was also abandoned at 1.20pm due to high winds, which were reportedly affecting barriers.

Two large trees have collapsed on roads in Pakenham, one in Pakenham Upper and one in Nar Nar Goon.
