Flower show

On Saturday 27 October the Berwick Anglican Church will conduct its 115th Annual Flower Show at the church. A bright display of flowers is planned and Devonshire Tea refreshments will be served from 2 to 4pm. The Flower Show had its beginnings in 1903 as a “Garden Fete” conducted by the church at the former Berwick Show Grounds in Clyde Road – now Buchanan Park.

Such was the Fete’s success that a decision was taken to conduct a “Grand Chrysanthemum, Flower and Fruit Show” in the following year. This event (the first Flower Show) was held at the Rechibite Hall (now Masonic Lodge) in the High Street in 1904. Prizes were awarded to the winners of the various competitions conducted. A programme of music was arranged, and in addition to the display of flowers and fruit, a number of stalls were in operation – refreshments, produce, jumble and fancy goods, bran pie, sweets and a “work stall”. Bran Pie was in fact a lucky dip – a tub filled with bran in which small gifts were buried.

– Saturday 27 October, from 1pm at the Berwick Anglican Church
