The Upper Beaconsfield Country Women’s Association has ticked off a remarkable 60 year milestone with a strong message: “We’re not just about tea and scones.”

During a gathering on Friday 30 November, 10 at the St John of God Church, the branch’s longest members were recognised with service awards.

Attendees reflected on the group’s tireless efforts over the years, raising much needed funds for organisations such as the CFA, 4Cs and Royal Flying Doctor’s Service.

Among the notable award recipients were Joan Medwin and Joyce Bumpstead, who each celebrated 67 and 66 years with the CWA respectively.

Branch president Lynette Lameris said she was proud of all of the members who sacrificed their time for the right reasons.

“They were there at the very beginning, which is incredible in itself,” she said.

“We had people celebrating 67 years, right through to people celebrating 19 years – which shows how many people have been on board.”

Founded in 1958, the branch has been instrumental in campaigning on social issues, fundraising, making trauma dolls for children and providing goods to families in need.

“There are lots of people in the world that just need a bit of a hand sometimes,” Mrs Lameris added.

Throughout the afternoon, members from Upper Beaconsfield, Pakenham, Dandenong and Noble Park participated in traditional games.

While the group is ramping up fundraising efforts before it takes a break for Christmas, Mrs Lameris is inviting anybody who is interested to come along to a meeting.

They are held on the fourth Friday of every month.

“It’s all about friendships and helping people out,” she added.
