Pakenham’s annual Carols by Candlelight was anything but a silent night, with hundreds gathering at the Toomuc Reserve for a night of Christmas festivities on Saturday 8 December.

The pre-carols entertainment kicked off at 6pm headlined by local talent Georgia Denton, best-known for her stint on X Factor in 2015, and Janaya Marino, who is actively involved in the local live music scene.

Outlook’s All Together Choir made its Pakenham Carols debut while students from Heritage College, Beaconhills Pakenham, Pakenham Hills Primary School, Lakeside Primary School, Pakenham Springs Primary School, Beaconhills Berwick Pop-Choir and Chairo Christian School took to the stage to perform their festive items.

As has become tradition, the Cardinia Civic Concert Band provided musical support for the evening from 8.30 onwards.

The presence of Auslan interpreters meant that carolers of all abilities could sing along to popular Christmas tunes such as Away In A Manger, Jingle Bells and The Holy City.

A special guests appearance by Santa himself was complimented by a moving nativity scene presented by St Patrick’s Church.

An impressive fireworks display lit up the skies at around 10pm to conclude the evenings activities.

Many local community groups were able to fundraise on the night, including the Lakeside Scout Group who sold almost 600 hot drinks on the night, which will go towards upgrading the group’s camping equipment.

“The Pakenham Carols by Candlelight was once again a hit with an estimated 6000 people enjoying the entertainment and getting in the festive spirit last Saturday evening!” Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Graeme Moore said.

“For many, especially the little ones, the highlight was when Santa dropped in to say hello! For me, as Mayor, it was wonderful to see everyone brought together from across Pakenham and wider to celebrate Christmas as a community, it was a great atmosphere.

“Events like this require the hard work and dedication of so many people, and I would like to say well-done and express special thanks to the sponsors, volunteers and Council staff who make Carols by Candlelight possible each year.

“We are so fortunate to live in a place where we can celebrate the festive season as a community, to support and enjoy the company of one another at this time of year.”
