An unlikely donor has conveyed a truckload of hay to drought-stricken Gippsland farmers, in what has been described as a “heart-warming” act of kindness.

The Kooweerup Motorcycle Club (KMC), situated at 335 McGregor Road, took the opportunity to lend a helping hand to farmers in Clydebank, just before Christmas.

As the track they use is agricultural land, the club accommodates a number of cows on the site to graze on the fields.

Recently, KMCs Terry Corkery realised they had an oversupply of hay, so he made a series of enquiries to find out what to do with it.

“We had a good crop of hay left over down at McGregor Road so we got onto some contractors who cut and bailed it and then left it with us,” Mr Corkery said.

“We decided we wanted to donate to the farmers.”

On Wednesday 5 December, the Kooweerup Motorcycle Club embarked on the road trip out to Sale. While it left the grassroots club out of pocket, the reaction of the farmers was something he will never forget.

“They were a bit overwhelmed that people actually noticed them, and that they weren’t just forgotten about,” Mr Corkery added.

“We knew they needed it and we thought we’d do something good.”

Members Colin Plant, Jim Gee, David Bowman undertook much of the labouring required to transport the truckload of hay.
