Lang Lang celebrated another successful Agricultural Show, drawing a crowd of around 2000 for a day of competition and family-friendly activities.

The annual January event held on Saturday 19 combines traditional agricultural competitions with arts, crafts, photography, cooking, produce, flowers, poultry and livestock showing.

Over 600 entries were received in the dog section, while horse entries were the highest yet with over 300 sign-ups on the day.

The introduction of a new sheep section saw around 80 sheep shown on the day, along with around 30 cattle.

Show Secretary Cheryl Berry said the day went off without a hitch.

“The day went really well; we were blessed with the weather and couldn’t have asked for a better day,” she said.

“We couldn’t have done it without our volunteers; it takes a lot of people to run a show – we had people on the gate, caterers providing lunches for all the volunteers, stewards in each of the sections for all the shows, judges and the local Men’s Shed selling donated veggies from local growers to raise money for the shed. Then of course there’s all the admin side of things and those who worked to get the grounds ready.

“I would like to thank all who helped, especially those who responded to my pleas for horse stewards on our Facebook page. They contacted me, came to a training session and turned up with little to no prior experience and did such an amazing job.”

In the horse section, the ‘Off the Track’ ridden and led competitions were both won by Katie Ramsay, of Baxter, on the horse called ‘Inafrenzy’ which retired from racing in 2016.

Alongside the agricultural elements, other competitions were fiercely contested by locals:

• Fruit Cake – Valmai Walker

• Carrot Cake – Cathey Visscher

• Junior Boiled Fruit Cake – Connor Allen

• Junior Carrot and Date Muffin – Jacob Bennet

• Patchwork – Wendy Gontier

• Hand Embroidery – Lyn Edden

• Sewing – Wendy Gontier

• Knitting – Valmai Walker

• Amateur Photography – Emily Page-Tormai

• Junior Amateur Photography – Heath Grave

The winner of the bike for the lucky gate prize was Courtney of Lang Lang.
