Fire under control, park still closed

By Kyra Gillespie

Increased smoke in and around the Bunyip State Park is nothing to be concerned about, authorities have confirmed.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has assured the community that the Bunyip bushfire is now under control, and, due to significant rain in the area, smoke may be visible from nearby communities and roads.

Management of the fire, on private land south of the state park, has been returned to local fire brigade control while DELWP manages the cleanup on public land.

Firefighters with heavy machinery will continue to patrol and rehabilitate the fire affected area and remove hazardous trees.

The park remains closed to the public with police actively patrolling the area.

DEWLP Wildlife Officers are actively monitoring a number of fire-affected animals and ask that residents do not feed or approach injured animals. Instead, call 5960 7100.
