Recycling crisis not over yet

Cardinia Shire''s recycling waste continues to be diverted to landfill. 190874_01.

Cardinia Shire’s recycling processor, SKM, has reopened all of its processing sites – but the recycling crisis isn’t over yet.

The Hallam Transfer Station through which all of Cardinia’s recycling materials are transported is still closed, meaning collected recyclables continue to be diverted to landfill.

SKM is currently working with the City of Casey to meet urgent compliance requirements before reopening the Hallam Transfer Station, which will then recommence accepting recycling from Cardinia Shire.

In the meantime, Cardinia Shire Council is encouraging residents to continue to separate their recyclable items from non-recyclable waste and to put recyclable items into their recycling bin, which are being collected as normal.

Waste can also be taken to these free collection points:

• Cardboard – Cleanaway Resource Recovery Centres (https://www.cleanaway.com.au/contact-us/pakenham/)

• Empty (squashed) aluminium cans – Future Recycling Pakenham (http://www.futurerecyclingtransferstation.com.au/)

• Soft plastics – any Coles or Woolworths Supermarkets

• Other recyclable products (searchable by type) – https://recyclingnearyou.com.au/
