A Nar Nar Goon grandmother is calling for Cardinia Shire Council to construct a footpath outside her grandchild’s school, to enable easier access for students and their families.

Lilly Keogh, who uses a walker, told the Gazette that the lack of a footpath between the crossing outside Nar Nar Goon Primary School and a dirt carpark used by dozens of parents each day was dangerous.

“There is no proper walkway, so to try and use my walker is tough on uneven ground,” she said.

“Some of the mums have prams, so this is also hard.”

Currently, a crossing outside the school’s gate on Spencer Street leads to a dirt carpark where parents congregate to pick up their children, which is separated from the road by a rough garden of shrubs and trees and a concrete footpath running parallel to the road.

A path has been worn across the garden and into the carpark in a continuation of the path established by the crossing, with the concrete ending in a raised lip over the dirt.A tree stump has previously been removed from the dirt path, and Ms Keogh said tree roots make the journey even more hazardous.

“I’ve had to battle with the mud through the winter and all the roots there,” she said, admitting she has tripped in the past.

“Having that little lip there too means you’ve got to lift the walker or pram up to get over.”

She is asking for the council to pave a proper path to the carpark to improve access for students and families alike.

“If they can fix the path that would make it easier for mum with pushers or walking along with toddlers, we don’t want any accidents or incidents.”

Cardinia Shire Council has been contacted for comment.
