Kooweerup residents have become all too familiar with the sound of hoon drivers tearing up their streets at night.

One resident captured the moment a silver Commodore performed a series of burnouts on Rossiter Road between Sims Lane and Denhams Road.

Melissa Lowe said the hooning occurs up to four times a week, usually between 8pm and 3am, scaring her children and keeping them awake as a result.

“It’s usually just the one car but there are others in the area too that I’ve heard of,” she said.

It’s believed police and Crime Stoppers have been notified by concerned locals on a number of occasions.

“They have advised to keep calling triple zero when it happens, but I just worry that they might not make it in time,” Ms Lowe said.

Officers from Kooweerup police station confirmed to the Gazette they were aware of vehicles frequently taking to the area to perform burn outs. They’ve said the matter is currently under investigation.

Police have a fairly good idea of those responsible but wouldn’t elaborate on how many people were being investigated and at what stage the investigation was at.

They’re calling on residents with CCTV or video footage of hoon behaviour to contact the station, rather than posting the vision to Facebook.

Some are hopeful a proposed motorsports facility on McGregor Road in Pakenham will prove the perfect place for drivers to “get it out of their system”.

The Cardinia Motor Recreation and Education Park is set to feature a motor racing facility which includes pit facilities, go-karting and a driver education centre.

Meanwhile, Ms Lowe is urging the culprits to stop the dangerous driving before someone is seriously injured or killed as a result.

“My message to them is to please stop,” Ms Lowe said.

“It’s very dangerous, I just hope nobody gets hurt or killed as a result.”
