Students tunnel to future

The group of Grade five and six students from Garfield Primary School

The Metro Tunnel HQ has notched up 100,000 visitors, following a Garfield Primary School trip to Melbourne.

Staff from Metro Tunnel HQ and Rail Projects Victoria (RPV) were on hand at the Swanston Street visitor centre to welcome the group of grade five and six students on Friday 6 September.

The students were guided around the centre, with a question and answer session about what the Metro Tunnel will mean for Melbourne’s growing population.

“I’d encourage every school that has a camp or visit planned to the city to add a tour of the Metro Tunnel HQ to their schedule – exactly like Garfield Primary has done,” Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said.

“The best way to learn about the infrastructure being created in our city and to really spark students’ imaginations is to get out and see it first hand – it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

The students learned how the tunnel boring machines work and tried the virtual reality goggles that recreate working on the massive machines.

Metro Tunnel HQ opened in June 2018 and provides the public with an opportunity to learn more about the benefits of the new rail line, scheduled for completion in 2025.
